Volunteers must be at least 16 years old.
Fill out and submit an application prior to one of our volunteer orientations, which are held approximately six times a year.
Check our website for orientation dates and information on how to apply. Orientation dates are posted five weeks before the session will be held. At that point, you have approximately three weeks to submit an application.
We only accept applications during the three-week application period before an orientation. Applications submitted outside that time frame are not reviewed or retained.
Applications are screened individually and volunteers are not selected on a first-come, first-served basis. Applications must be filled out completely and legibly. Specifically, we would like to know what areas of the Medical Center you are interested in, what your motivation for volunteering is and what qualities you have that you think will enhance our program.
No prior experience is required.
You will be required to provide proof of immunity to measles, mumps, rubella and varicella (chicken pox). This can be done by providing proof of two immunizations for each of these diseases or a blood titer report from a lab that shows immunity. Clearance for tuberculosis (TB) is also required, but if you are accepted into the program, UC San Diego Health System will provide that screening.
Current volunteer opportunities are listed here.
Shadowing is not part of the Volunteer Services Program.
The minimum volunteer commitment is 100 hours, which typically takes six to seven months to complete, with one, four-hour shift per week. We ask that anyone interested in applying, really consider whether or not they have the time to make this long-term commitment.
This can be discussed during the placement interview.
Certain visa classifications may not be eligible for participation in the volunteer program because of government restrictions. Contact Volunteer Services at firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
There is no real link between Human Resources and Volunteer Services, so if you are interested in jobs at UC San Diego Health System, it’s best to check out their employment website.
