Edward Babakanian

Edward Babakanian, CIO

Chief Information Officer, UC San Diego Health System

Mr. Ed Babakanian is the chief information officer (CIO) at UC San Diego Health System. He is a member of our senior management team, responsible for all aspects of information technology, telecommunications and health information systems.

In addition to his role as CIO, Mr. Babakanian is a member of the senior leadership team, contributing to the overall strategic planning and management of the operational activities of UC San Diego Health System. He has served on our Strategic and Operational Leadership Committee and the enterprise-wide Quality Improvement Council, as well as serving as chair of the Managed Care and Medical Group Systems Steering Committee, and co-chair of Clinical Information Systems Committee.

Prior to joining UC San Diego Health System, Mr. Babakanian was vice president and CIO at Community Hospitals of Central California in Fresno.

Mr. Babakanian, who has more than 20 years of experience in senior-level health care informatics positions, holds a Master of Science in computer sciences and a Bachelor of Science in management and business administration.

Under his leadership, UC San Diego Health System has achieved national recognition for leading-edge initiatives that have measurably improved both the quality and efficiency of health care delivery with significant positive impact on patient safety.

UC San Diego Health System has been consistently recognized nationally as being among the top 100 most wired hospitals by the American Hospital Association’s publication, Hospitals & Health Networks. In addition, UC San Diego Health System has received awards for being among the top 25 most wireless hospitals, leveraging wireless technology to improve the efficiency of the care process.

UC San Diego Health System has reached Stage 7 of electronic medical record (EMR) adoption — a ranking devised by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS). This distinction was achieved by only 1.1 percent of hospitals in the U.S. in 2011.
