State Disability Insurance

The University of California does not participate in the California State Disability Insurance (SDI) program. We are self insured with Liberty Mutual. However, if you are a new UC employee and become disabled you may be eligible to participate in the SDI program through your former employer. Below are some of your options.

Liberty Mutual and State Disability Insurance (SDI) - (First 18 months)

  • If you have been employed with the University for less than 18 months, AND you had worked at another job in California prior to being employed by the University.
  • You need to file for both Liberty Mutual AND SDI.
  • You will receive a combined total of 70% (if you enrolled in Supplemental Disability).

Liberty Mutual Only

  • If you’ve been with the University for more than 18 months, you will no longer be eligible for State Disability Insurance (SDI), and will receive only the 70% from Liberty Mutual (if you enrolled in Supplemental Disability).

Liberty Mutual and SDI

  • If you have been with the University for more than 18 months, AND you have another job outside of the University, you will receive the maximum benefit from SDI and 70% from Liberty Mutual (if you enrolled in Supplemental Disability).
