| Special Instructions: |
A Bactec mycolytic bottle is needed
for correct processing of blood cultures for the detection of MAI (Mycobacterium
avium-intracellulare are) and other Mycobacteria. This third bottle is not
routinely available with the blood culture sets, but must be obtained from the
Microbiology lab. 1. The top of the bottle must be cleansed with an alcohol swab
just prior to injecting patient's blood sample. Do not treat the rubber stopper
with compounds containing iodine disinfectants. 2. Add 5mL of blood to the
Bactec mycolytic bottle. |
