Clinical significance of culture: to
identify infectious organisms occurring within the respiratory system. Do not
send specimen of saliva or spittle (unsatisfactory). If gram stain demonstrates
more than 25 epithelial cells/lpf, the report will state: "saliva? Please
resubmit". 1. Obtain sterile 4 oz. plastic specimen container from floor stock.
2. Prior to specimen collection, cleansing of the mouth is necessary. Instruct
patient to wash mouth with chloraseptic x2 for 1 minute then rinse mouth with
water. Do not cleanse mouth if specimen is for viral culture. 3. Instruct
patient to expectorate first "deep" sputum specimen directly into container and
to close top of container. 4. Submit specimen as soon as possible after
collection. If specimen is delayed, then store at room temperature. A sample
requested for viral culture should be refrigerated (see viral culture
