| Special Instructions: |
Obtain BBL Cultureswab Plus from the
Microbiology lab. Preference would be a syringe or sterile tube of patient's pus
or purulent fluid. Swabs should be submitted to the laboratory only when
aspirated purulent fluid cannot be obtained. Patient preparation: apply 10%
providone iodine to site. Leave on skin for 2-4 minutes. Remove iodine with
alcohol swab. Collect fluid or pus with a syringe. Remove needle and replace
with a sterile Luer-loc syringe plug (storehouse stock #175-612). Alternative
would be to inject contents of syringe into a clean, sterile tube. Use swabs to
collect sample if insufficient amount for syringe. Immerse swabs in transport
media. Requisition must state specific site of specimen, current antibiotic
therapy, clinical diagnosis, and time of collection. AFB culture for abscess
will include an acid fast stain. |
