Special Instructions: Studies show that <4% of patients have a positive toxin within 2 days of an initial negative assay (J. Clin. Micro. 46(11):3686,2006).  Therefore, it is recommended that at most, one additional specimen, collected 24 hours later, be tested after a negative result, and any repeats on  a positive stool be performed >7 days later.
