ROUTINE SENSITIVITES: Performed on
all significant aerobic pathogens, except where indicated for particular
isolates. Turnaround time is 24 to 48 hours from when isolate is identified.
Antibiotics not included in a panel can be added by special request. ANAEROBE
SUSCEPTIBILITY TESTING: All anaerobes isolated from blood cultures or sterile
body fluids will be tested for susceptibility to
penicillin/metronidazole/clindamycin. The turnaround time is 48 to 72 hours from
when isolate is reported. Anaerobes from other sites will only have
susceptibility testing at special request of patient's physician. YEAST or
FUNGAL SUSCEPTIBILITY TESTING: All yeast isolated from blood cultures or sterile
body fluids will be tested for susceptibility to
fluconazole/voriconalole/caspofun will be added for cryptococcus). The
turnaround time is 48 to 72 hours from first report. Yeast or fungal isolates
from other sites will only have susceptibility testing by special request.
Repeat isolates from same patient will only be retested at 2-week interval
(based on date of collection). MYCOBACTERIOLOGY SUSCEPTIBILITY TESTING: All
mycobacteriology isolates will be tested for susceptibility to various
antimicrobial agents. The primary panel for m.tuberculosis will include
inh/Rifampin/ethambutol/moxifloxacin/pza. The current susceptibility testing for
mycobacterium avium-intracellulare group (mac) includes Clarithromycin.
Susceptibility testing panel for rapid growing mycobacteria includes
amikacin/septra/clarithromycin/doxycycline/erythromycin/ciprofloxacin. All
strains of m. tuberculosis demonstrating multiple resistance will be tested
against other antibiotics as determined by lab director or patient's physician.
Turnaround time for MGIT susceptibilities is one week; two to three weeks for
Plate mic's. Susceptibilities cannot be setup until there is a sufficient amount
of growth present, which range from one to six weeks. Repeat isoates from the
same patient will only be retested at three months (based on date of
collection). |
