Special Instructions: Routine, direct smears for gram stain are always done on the following samples: abscess, body fluids, body tissues, Spinal fluids, external body sites, respiratory (other than Throat), tips & lines, wounds, drainage samples, and genital specimens (from male only). Direct smears for gram stain on other samples are only done when requested. A request for gram stain only for a normally sterile body site or fluid, will always include a routine culture.
