GENERAL LABORATORY NOTES for IMMUNOGENETICS & TRANSPLANTATION


General Sample Requirements:
     Each blood tube or individual container must be labeled with:
          - Patient's legal full name
          - At least one of the following identifiers:
                    Medical Record Number   
                    Date of Birth
                    Social Security Number
          - Draw Date / Time
          - Phlebotomist signature
          - Vials containing lymph nodes, spleen, or other tissue must also be individually labeled.
 
All samples must be maintained at room temperature.  Do not refrigerate.  All samples must be delivered to the lab as soon as possible (HLA Typing samples within 24 hours of collection, Cell Surface Markers within 6 hours).  Routine samples must reach the lab by 1500 hrs on Fridays. 
 
The laboratory can facilitate the testing of out of town patients by sending complete blood collection sets.
 
 
***SPECIMEN REQUIREMENTS:
 
Yellow Top (ACD-A) Tubes (10 ml):
     - Avoid hemolysis.
     -  Keep at room temperature - Do not refrigerate.
     - Mix gently but thoroughly.
     - Tubes maybe obtained from ITL.  Call lab to request.
     - Hand carry or send via courier so sample reaches laboratory within 24hrs of collection.
     - Bone Marrow specimens must be mixed well after aspiration.  Notify lab immediately so that courier can be arranged.
 
     - Samples for Immunophenotyping by Flow Cytometry must be received in lab on the day of collection.
 
LAVENDER TOP (EDTA) TUBES (5 ml):
     - Avoid hemolysis.
     - Keep at room temperature - Do not refrigerate.
     - Must be mixed immediately after blood drawing to prevent clotting.
     - Hand carry or send via courier so sample reaches laboratory within 6 hrs of collection.
 
RED TOP TUBES (10 ml):
     - Avoid hemolysis.
     -  Keep at room temperature - Do not refrigerate.
     - Hand carry or send via first class mail so sample reaches laboratory as soon as possible.
     - Serum separator tubes are not recommended.
     - Sample must be drawn pre-heparin.
 
GREEN TOPS (Heparin):
     - Samples for Cell Surface Makers must be received in lab on the day of collection.
 
BONE MARROW SPECIMENS:
     - Mix well after aspiration.
 
BIOPSIES/TISSUES (Lymph Nodes, Spleen):
     - Preserve in RPMI medium with HEPES buffer.
     -  Place on ice.
