UC San Diego Health System 2012 Nurse of the Year: Cheryl Kosits, RN, BSN, MSN
Cheryl Kosits RN, BSN, MSN is being honored as our 2012 Nurse of the Year for her tireless dedication to nursing excellence. Cheryl exemplifies the tenets of professional nursing in all respects.
Cheryl is a lifelong learner who has a real appreciation for the power of knowledge in that she knows that knowledge is most powerful when it is shared. And she shares her knowledge and expertise freely. She has published textbook chapters, is a nationally respected speaker, serves as adjunct faculty, and is an invaluable resource for all of us at Moores Cancer Center - patients, nurses, and physicians alike.
Cheryl cherishes the unique relationship between nurses and patients, and is a role model for all of us in regard to patient advocacy. In her years of nursing she spent a number of years in administration, then returned to her first love, direct patient care, when she joined the cancer center in 2002. Her position as a case manager in the cancer center certainly affords her plenty of opportunity to make a difference in the lives of her patients and their families; and she makes an even greater difference as a role model for all of us who work alongside her.
Cheryl is a collaborative member of many committees and working groups at Moores Cancer Center. She was a key member of the EPIC / BEACON build team, and continues to be the nursing super user for her department. Cheryl developed guidelines for, and manages triage of all new GI cancer patients, ensuring that each person is placed with the appropriate physician in a timely manner.
Last, but not least, Cheryl is a champion on nursing autonomy. She has used her role in the cancer center shared governance to bring attention to areas of need. Cheryl identified a vulnerable patient population, and is developing a structure and process for ensuring that patients who are transported to the cancer center by outside facilities have a safe and effective hand-off.
Cheryl’s commitment to nursing excellence has truly been the hallmark of her long and illustrious nursing career. Cheryl was recognized in 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011 with the Millie Award in recognition of her outstanding clinical research contributions. Cheryl also received the UC San Diego Health System Award for Clinical Excellence in Outpatient Oncology in 2008 and 2009. Finally, this year’s Nurse of the Year Award brings Cheryl full circle. Cheryl was the first nurse in San Diego County to receive a Nurse of the Year Award in the early 1970’s. We are indeed fortunate to have Cheryl here at UC San Diego Health System, and we are proud to call her our colleague and the 2012 UC San Diego Health System Nurse of the Year.
