Access to UC San Diego Health System Doctors through Medicare

Original Medicare

UC San Diego Medical Group (our physicians) and UC San Diego Medical Center (our hospitals and clinics) accept Original Medicare (Medicare Parts A and B) "assignment" or payment. This means that we agree to not bill you for more than the Medicare deductible and coinsurance for Medicare Part A and B.

Supplemental or Medi-Gap Plans

UC San Diego Medical Group and UC San Diego Medical Center also accept Medicare Parts A and B used in conjunction with Medi-Gap or Medicare supplemental plans. You can see a UC San Diego doctor and we will bill your supplemental plan. Please verify with your supplemental plan that your benefit coverage applies to any Medicare provider that accepts Medicare assignment. There are rare instances when a supplemental or Medi-Gap plan restricts your benefit coverage to a limited provider network.

Medicare Advantage Plans

Medicare Advantage Plans (Medicare Part C) are another option for Medicare-eligible patients. Under Medicare Advantage Plans, private insurance companies that are approved by Medicare provide health insurance coverage. Medicare Advantage Plans can be Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO), Preferred Provider Organizations (PPO) and Point of Service (POS). If you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan as an individual, some plans’ options will give you in-network access to UC San Diego Health System doctors.

2014 Open Enrollment

Senior man

For coverage starting January 1, 2015, the annual open enrollment period is October 15 through December 7, 2014. During this time you can sign up or change your Medicare Advantage Plan. You can also sign up for a Medicare Advantage Plan when you turn 65, or if you become disabled (under age 65). Learn more about when you can enroll in Medicare at Medicare.gov.
