Maternal Weight and Wellness Program Team

UC San Diego Health System’s Maternal Weight and Wellness Program includes specialists from obstetrics, fetal imaging, anesthesia, perinatology, psychiatry, and the Bariatric and Metabolic Institute.

Meet the core Maternal Weight and Wellness team:

Yvette LaCoursiere, MD, MPH

Yvette LaCoursiere, MD, MPH
Lead Obstetrician

Dr. LaCoursiere began her faculty career at the University of Utah and returned to UC San Diego to complete the Women’s Reproductive Health Research (WRHR) program, where she has focused on outcomes associated with maternal obesity. She enjoys caring for individual patients, but is also committed to improving the health of women as a whole. She has won the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology & Council on Residency Education’s National Faculty Teaching award three times at two institutions and has 19 publications. She has also presented regionally and nationally on maternal obesity issues. With recent grant funding, Dr. LaCoursiere has initiated the Maternal Weight and Wellness Program at UC San Diego.


Andrew Hull, MD

Perinatal and Ultrasonographic Consultant

Dr. Hull is a maternal-fetal medicine subspecialist. He has a long-standing interest in fetal imaging and the management of complex pregnancies and has published numerous journal articles and book chapters dealing with a wide variety of pregnancy issues. He believes maternal weight and wellness should be optimized wherever possible prior to pregnancy, and that with appropriate care, an excellent outcome for mom and baby can almost always be achieved.


Dolores Pretorius, MD

Fetal Assessment

Dr. Pretorius specializes in fetal ultrasound and has been working in this field for 30 years. She assisted in developing 3-D ultrasound. She is interested in how advancing BMI impacts sonography and prenatal diagnosis.


Thomas Archer, MD, MBA

Thomas Archer, MD, MBA
Anesthesia Evaluation Lead

Dr. Archer is a clinical professor of anesthesiology at UC San Diego and the director of Obstetric Anesthesia. He loves being part of the maternity team at UC San Diego, taking care of mothers-to-be, working closely with obstetricians, nurses and midwives, teaching residents, and conducting research. One of his research interests is in the use of ultrasound to facilitate the placement of spinal and epidural blocks in overweight patients whose spinal landmarks are difficult to palpate. Dr. Archer has also worked with Dr. LaCoursiere and the maternity team to develop a Weight and Wellness Bundle for the integrated and comprehensive care of overweight patients while they are being cared for in UC San Diego Health System’s labor and delivery suite.


Santiago Horgan, MD

Referral for UC San Diego Health System’s Bariatric and Metabolic Institute

Dr. Horgan is chief of Minimally Invasive Surgery at UC San Diego Health System, an internationally recognized expert in robot-assisted surgery, and a pioneer in the surgical treatment of morbid obesity, as well as a specialist in surgery and physiology of the esophagus. Dr. Horgan is also director of our Bariatric Metabolic Institute. He was among the first surgeons trained to perform the LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding System procedure used for the treatment of obesity.


Eduardo Grunvald, MD

Medical Weight Loss Consultant

Dr. Grunvald is responsible for assessing bariatric surgery patients before surgery and evaluating co-morbidities that may exist. Dr. Grunvald also coordinates care with primary care providers and assists patients with post-operative medication adjustments and medical follow-up.
