The Antimicrobial Utilization Team (AUT) is a multidisciplinary team consisting of an infectious diseases pharmacist and an infectious diseases physician. The AUT monitors antibiotic use and bacterial resistance patterns, provides education, and assists with cost-effective antibiotic use.
The AUT reviews records of all adult inpatients receiving parenteral antibiotics daily for appropriateness based on Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee-approved guidelines (See Empiric Antimicrobial Use Guidelines). If deviations from these guidelines are detected, a review of the patient's computer record is made and, if clinically warranted, a recommendation is made to the patient's primary physician either verbally or via a written note in the patient’s chart.
The AUT acts as a resource to the medical, pharmacy and nursing staffs regarding appropriate antimicrobial management and usage. The AUT is also integrated with the infectious diseases consulting team.
