UC San Diego Heavy Breathers Team

CFF Great Strides Event

The UC San Diego Adult CF Clinic team walked as the UC San Diego Heavy Breathers in the CFF's Great Strides event on May 18th at De Anza Cove.

We had a great time, walking with patients, families, and staff under the beautiful San Diego sun.

Big Winners!

  • Congratulations to Janet Carruthers for being nominated for the 2013 Leslie Petrone Women Who Take Our Breath Away award.
  • Congratulations to Jessica Goggin, RN, for winning the California Nursing Association’s Nursing Excellence award.
  • Congratulations AGAIN to Jessica Goggin for winning the 2012 Leslie Petrone Women Who Take Our Breath Away award.  She was honored last year at the 4th Annual Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Ladies Luncheon.

Top Doc in San Diego

Congratulations to Kevin Shaw, MD, for being named one of the 2012 "Top Docs" in San Diego Magazine's Physicians of Exceptional Excellence survey in the category of critical care.

The list is created by compiling the responses of each member of the San Diego County Medical Society, who is asked to vote for board-certified physicians practicing in San Diego County to whom they would refer their own patients, family and friends. The voting results included 145 UC San Diego Health System physicians in 39 specialties.

Being rated among the best by colleagues is a distinct honor. Dr. Shaw is recognized for his expertise, dedication to patients, and superb service. Our CF program staff and patients already know that Dr. Shaw is a “Top Doc” and we congratulate him on this well-deserved recognition!  Click here for more details.

Therapies on the Horizon

A wide variety of new therapies are in development, including:

  • New inhaled antibiotics
  • CFTR potentiators and correctors
  • Airway clearance therapies

Clinician’s Corner

As our clinic continues its rapid growth, we want to keep you informed of active projects and goals for improvement.  We have recently begun the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Self-Study Project.  This program is aimed at improving our clinical outcomes through evaluation and improvement of our clinic processes.  We are working with the Rady Children’s Hospital’s CF Clinic, with a focus on improving the transition between the pediatric and adult care centers.  If you or your family would like to be involved with this improvement project, or can provide input or ideas, please let us know!

Infection Control

In an effort to reduce the transition of resistant organisms from patient to patient, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) or Burkholderia cepacia, our clinic makes an effort to minimize patient interaction during our sessions.  For this reason, we aim to eliminate time spent in the waiting room on clinic nights, bringing patients directly into rooms when possible.  We also have a “one patient, one room” policy.  No clinic rooms are re-used by another CF patient until the following week to minimize transmission of organisms by contact on surfaces or aerosolized secretions during coughing.

If you have any questions or comments about our infection control techniques, please let us know, or bring them up at your next clinic appointment.
