About the Trauma Center
A Worldwide Leader in Trauma Care
UC San Diego Health System operates the region’s first Level 1 Trauma Center.
Directed by Raul Coimbra, MD, PhD, the Trauma Center is part of the San Diego Trauma System. It serves the area west of the 805 to the ocean and south of the highway 8 down to the Mexican border.
Injuries treated in the Trauma Center include:
- Motor vehicle collisions
- Gunshot wounds
- Fires and burns
We Set the Bar
Our team responds to the highest level of critical injury. Equipped with special facilities, advanced technology and highly trained personnel, the Trauma Center operates 24/7 and admits over 3,200 patients a year who have experienced severe injury.
In 2013, we opened a state-of-the-art trauma resuscitation unit to provide the highest quality of comprehensive care to a larger number of severely injured patients. Our trauma bays, resuscitation suites and surgical intensive care unit (SICU) are equipped with leading-edge monitoring, imaging and life support technologies. We also have a surgical progressive unit for patients recuperating from surgical treatment of a traumatic injury.
Transport and Pre-Hospital System
Whether arriving by helicopter or ambulance, coordination of care begins before you get to the hospital.
Paramedics communicate by radio with mobile intensive care nurses and doctors rapidly review criteria of your condition.
If you have a serious multi-system injury, or require resuscitation or immediate surgical intervention, you will bypass the Emergency Department and be brought directly to the Trauma Center resuscitation suite or operating room.
Pediatric Trauma Care
In the event that a large number of children in San Diego county are critically injured and Rady Children’s Hospital is in trauma bypass, our Trauma Center handles the care of pediatric trauma patients.
We Provide Trauma Care for Imperial County
There is no trauma system in Imperial County, and physician specialty coverage is limited. Many patients are transferred to our Trauma Center from Imperial County hospitals.
