Thomas McAfee, M.D., Dean for Clinical Affairs

 

Thomas McAfee, M.D., Physician in ChiefThomas McAfee, M.D., Dean for Clinical Affairs, UC San Diego Health Sciences, provides leadership for UC San Diego’s inpatient and outpatient physician practice, and for the advancement of the clinical enterprise vision.  

He is responsible for ensuring that UCSD's clinical practice is achieving the highest standards of service, quality, safety, compliance and overall performance.  In addition helps to assure that our clinical programs and activities are integrated with and support the clinical, research, educational and community outreach missions of the Health Sciences. 

Prior to his appointment as Dean, Dr. McAfee had served as Physician-in-Chief for Health Sciences, and Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine since his recruitment to UCSD in 2002. He has played an important role with the UCSD Medical Group and Medical Center in successfully implementing initiatives to improve patient access, quality, safety and resource utilization.  He has been an effective advocate for UCSD and our clinical enterprise with business, community and government constituents, and has been active with the Medical Society, Hospital Association and numerous external boards and committees.

Dr. McAfee was previously Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine and Associate Chief Medical Officer in the Department of Medicine at UCSF, and Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer for Brown & Toland Medical Group in San Francisco. He joined the UCSF faculty in 1987, after earning his M.D. and completing his residency training in Internal Medicine at Georgetown University School of Medicine and Hospital.

Dr. McAfee served in a number of leadership roles at UCSF, including membership on the Strategic Planning Committee for Health Care Futures, the Quality Improvement Executive Committee, and board membership on the Clinical Services Executive Board.

As Chief Medical Officer for Brown & Toland, he played a lead role in the largest Independent Practice Association (IPA) in San Francisco, with more than 1,600 physicians board certified in over 40 specialties, serving more than 260,000 patients. They are a three-time winner of the prestigious Pacific Business Group on Health (PBGH) Blue Ribbon Award for medical excellence.
