UCSD Medical Center's long-range plan is designed to create the world-class academic medical center that San Diegans deserve, while improving care today for all the patients we serve. Our commitment to provide exceptional patient care, including highly specialized services not generally available in community-based practices, supports research toward new treatments and cures for disease; and trains the practitioners of the future.
UCSD is fortunate to have two successful medical complexes today--on the UCSD campus and in Hillcrest--that provide convenient points of access to UCSD physicians and services for patients throughout the County, including those served at the Veterans Affairs San Diego Medical Center hospital, which is primarily staffed by UCSD faculty. This will continue to be our model in the future. In fact, services on both UCSD medical complexes will be expanded to further improve access. |

Looking Forward
As a step toward creating a campus-based university hospital, by 2014 UCSD Medical Center is planning to reallocate 125-150 inpatient beds to expand Thornton Hospital and allow for sorely needed improvements at the Hillcrest hospital.
Our working model envisions that by 2030, UCSD will reallocate additional licensed beds to our East Campus complex to create the campus-based University Hospital. In Hillcrest, UCSD will continue to provide a full-range of outpatient services, including primary and specialty care, surgery, imaging, emergency and urgent care. As part of the plan we will also explore maintaining inpatient beds in Hillcrest.
For UCSD Medical Center, this plan strenthens our ability to serve a diverse regional population with an extensive system of sophisticated hospital-based, outpatient and emergency care services on both campuses.
