Ms. Bertell is associate vice chancellor for UC San Diego Health Sciences Development. In this role, she is responsible for all fundraising related to Health Sciences, including clinical, research and academic programs. She has 23 years of demonstrated success in philanthropy – 10 of them in the San Diego community.
Ms. Bertell came to UC San Diego Health Sciences in 2011 as executive director of Development for principal gifts and was responsible for many of the University’s highest-level donors and prospects. She provided support for external relations, strategic planning and gift solicitations.
Prior to coming to UC San Diego, Ms. Bertell was senior vice president for The Greenwood Company, a consulting firm headquartered in San Francisco. There, she conducted campaign planning and management for such organizations as the Gladstone Institutes, the Buck Institute for Research on Aging, and Scripps Health.
From 2002 to 2007, Ms. Bertell served as vice president of Institute Relations at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California, where she co-led its first comprehensive campaign, which raised $175 million.
Ms. Bertell has also worked in key fundraising roles for the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California, California Lutheran University, Greater Southwest Healthcare System in Washington, DC, the Autism Society of America and UC Los Angeles Health Sciences.
Ms. Bertell is a graduate of UC Los Angeles and holds a master’s degree in communications management from the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism at the University of Southern California.
A certified fundraising executive with the National Society of Fund Raising Executives, Ms. Bertell is also a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, the Association of Healthcare Philanthropy and the Southern California Association of Healthcare Development. In 2004, San Diego Metropolitan magazine presented her with a 40 Under 40 Award.
