Tremendous Hope on the Horizon
In recent years, remarkable progress has been made in the battle against cancer. Researchers at UCSD and elsewhere have established a biological framework that explains how cancer occurs. With a basic outline of cancer’s complexity, scientists are now on the road to developing new therapies and someday a cure.
The basic researchers and physician-scientists at the Moores UCSD Cancer Center are some of the best in the world. Teams are exploring the genetics and molecular biology of gastrointestinal cancers, seeking new methods to stop cancer growth, investigating methods for symptom control, and continually coming up with new knowledge and technology to improve diagnosis and treatment.
One of the benefits of an academic medical center is your access to clinical trials of new treatments. These strictly controlled human studies offer an alternative for patients who have not done well with standard treatment. In addition, patients who participate in clinical trials help others by contributing to medical knowledge. Enrollment in a clinical trial is entirely voluntary and you needn’t participate if you feel uncomfortable doing so. It is often helpful to talk to your physician, family members, or friends about deciding to join a trial.
