Genetic Counselors and Physician Specialists

At UCSD Medical Center's Cancer Genetics Unit, genetic counselors and physician specialists work closely together to ensure that patients and families with an increased risk of cancer get outstanding care, with a focus on cancer prevention and early detection. Our team members include:

Genetic Counselors

Lisa Madlensky, Ph.D., Cancer Genetics 
Dr. Madlensky provides cancer risk assessment and genetic counseling for patients and families at the Moores UCSD Cancer Center Family Cancer Genetics Program. She is also a researcher at the Cancer Center, focusing on cancer prevention in those at increased risk of disease because of their family history or genetic predisposition.

Physician Specialists

Michael Bouvet, M.D. , Surgical Oncology, Endocrine Surgery
Dr. Bouvet specializes in surgical oncology and endocrine surgery. He performs surgeries for tumors of the pancreas, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, liver, esophagus, and stomach, as well as for other conditions. He has performed many whipple procedures for pancreatic cancer. In his recent medical publications, he has reported on new techniques for imaging pancreatic cancer and for understanding its causes and the factors that influence its growth. As an endocrine cancer specialist, Dr. Bouvet provides care for families with rare genetic forms of endocrine cancer including Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia types 1 and 2.


John Carethers, M.D. , Gastroenterology
Dr. Carethers provides specialized screening of patients at increased risk of colorectal cancer and upper gastrointestinal cancers. He is one of the leading researchers in the field of hereditary colorectal cancer risk, including Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP) and Hereditary Non-polyposis Colorectal Cancer (HNPCC).

Sonia Ramamoorthy, M.D. , Colorectal Surgery, Minimally Invasive Surgery
Dr. Ramamoorthy performs open and minimally invasive colorectal surgeries as well as all standard general surgery procedures. She has advanced training in colon and rectal surgery and has special certification in minimally invasive surgical techniques to treat cancers as well as other conditions in the colon, rectum, and anus. Dr. Ramamoorthy is experienced with the unique surgical needs of patients with polyposis syndromes and hereditary colorectal cancer.

Cheryl C. Saenz, M.D., Gynecologic Oncology
Dr. Saenz is an Associate Clinical Professor in Reproductive Medicine and a member of the Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG), the largest multi-institutional organization conducting research into the treatment and prevention of gynecologic cancers. She is particularly interested in gynecologic cancer prevention, and provides specialized management for women at increased risk of ovarian and endometrial cancers.


Anne Wallace, M.D., Surgical Oncology, Reconstructive Surgery
Dr. Wallace is Director of UCSD Cancer Center's breast care unit and is board certified in both general surgery and plastic surgery. She has extensive experience in all aspects of breast health, specifically breast cancer and breast reconstruction. Her research interests include development of better imaging technologies for both treatment and detection of cancer. This specifically is linked with her strong interest in high-risk patients and breast cancer prevention. Dr. Wallace provides long-term management for women at high risk of developing breast cancer.
