Check Us Out!
We invite you to take a brief tour and learn about the kinds of resources you’ll have access to as a patient of the Moores UCSD Cancer Center in La Jolla.
A social worker will welcome you, introduce you to the facility, and tell you how things work and what you can expect on your first and subsequent visits.
As part of your tour, you’ll visit our Patient and Family Education Center and learn about the resources available to you, such as:
- Computers linked to online medical and disease information
- Cancer-related books and literature
- Volunteers (also cancer patients) who can listen and provide information
- A specialty store for cancer-related merchandise such as wigs and prostheses.
Your First Appointment
Upon entering the two-story lobby, you’ll see a reception desk where you can check in. On your first visit, the receptionist will probably direct you to a touch-screen kiosk where you’ll answer questions to our survey, “How Can We Help You and Your Family?” This short survey takes just a few minutes to complete, but it gives us a lot of insight into your concerns and problems so we can respond quickly to your needs and design a care support program especially for you.
Within a day or two, a social worker will contact you to talk about your individualized care support plan for dealing with personal, medical and family concerns. We carry out what we call “the science of caring” with a dedicated team of social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, pastoral counselors and educators whose goal is to maximize quality of life and minimize the disruption to normal living during your treatment.
