UCSD's Team of Lung Cancer Specialists

As San Diego’s only academic medical center, we have world-renowned specialists who take advantage of technologies and therapies not available elsewhere in the region. When you become a patient at the Moores UCSD Cancer Center, your care is provided by a multidisciplinary team that includes a medical oncologist, pulmonologist (lung specialist), surgeon, radiation oncologist, interventional radiologist, and a pathologist who is an expert in the examination of lung tissue.

Medical Oncology

Lyudmila A. Bazhenova, M.D. - Dr. Bazhenova’s medical practice is dedicated entirely to lung cancer patients.  With her complete focus on lung cancer, she is aware of all newly approved therapies, as well as treatments only available in clinical trials.

Pulmonology

Drs. Harrell and Channick do laser resection of lung tumors blocking the airways, a highly specialized technique that requires extensive training.  UCSD is one of the few specialized centers in the country to offer this procedure to treat lung tumors. In addition, Dr. Channick performs diagnosis of lung cancer using endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) fine needle aspiration (FNA) instead of surgery.

Radiology and Radiation Oncology
  • Steven Rose, M.D., Interventional Radiologist
Dr. Rose utilizes a CT scan and special electrode to provide radiofrequency ablation – a technique for patients in whom surgery is not an option – to ease symptoms in advanced cases.
  • Ajay Sandhu, M.D., Radiation Oncologist
Dr. Sandu and the UCSD team of radiation oncologists provide techniques such as respiratory gated stereotactic body radiotherapy. Brachytherapy is also provided in collaboration with the pulmonary special procedures team.
Surgeons

Drs. Thistlewaite and Perricone have more than 18 years experience with lung cancer, including rare surgical procedures not offered elsewhere in the region.

Additional team members include  Thomas Savides, M.D., who works with Dr. Channick in performing endoscopic ultrasound procedures, and pathologist Gracy Y. Lin, M.D., Ph.D.
