Transportation Assistance

Transportation to and from the Cancer Center can sometimes be difficult for patients and their families. Below are a number of transportation options that may help.

  • You can also transfer to San Diego paratransit services

  • Pick an application up their location, Monday-Friday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
  • You will receive a decision by mail within 21 days
  • Fourteen days' advanced reservation is required to schedule a ride

  • No wheelchairs
  • Person must be ambulatory, with no bone involvement
  • No Charge

 American Red Cross

  • Will provide a one-time-only emergency ride.

 ARC Transportation

Hours: 4 a.m. to 10 p.m.

  • Two-way transport between El Centro and Calexico to La Jolla (Thornton Hospital)
  • Provides round trip four days a week
  • They alternate service on Mondays and Fridays
  • Every two weeks provide service between El Centro and South County
  • Patient/family member can be picked up at a specific location in El Centro or Calexico OR they can be picked up at their home for an extra fee
  • Pick up in front of Thornton Hospital between 1:30 p.m. to 2 p.m.
  • $15 one passenger round trip
  • $21 round trip with pick up at person's home
  • Families may also use this service
  • This must be scheduled ahead of time at the above number

The Emilio Nares Foundation (ENF) provides information and support for the parents of children who have cancer. One of the services provided is transportation, which is essential to ensure that sick children access weekly chemotherapy and other crucial medical appointments when their families lack personal transportation and public transportation is not adequate. Contact the foundation for information on transportation services or making a donation.

  • For pediatric patients with cancer only

  • Folding Transportable lightweight wheelchairs accepted
  • Person must be ambulatory
  • No Charge
  • Patients should be receiving treatment in San Diego hospitals
  • Child should be accompanied by a responsible adult over 21 yrs.

 Leukemia and Lymphoma Society

  • Must be receiving treatment for one of their covered diseases or syndromes including, but not limited to:  multiple myeloma, leukemia, lymphoma and primary amyloidosis
  • Must complete application and be approved
  • Mileage, parking and taxi reimbursement for up to $500 per fiscal year (July 1 - June 30)

  • Transport to medical appointments, with no eligibility requirements
  • Rate for ambulatory: $25 RT, plus $1/mile
  • Rate for wheelchair: $85 flat fee
  • Accepts all major credit cards
  • Same-day service is considered, but one-day notice is preferred

Hours:
Monday through Friday. starting at 8:15 a.m.-4:35 pm
Service Area: Shuttle services currently serve five fixed stops:

  • UCSD Medical Center, Hillcrest: Stops at the main hospital entrance, south side by valet parking attendant
  • Old Town Transit Center: Stops at 4005 Taylor Street (at Pacific Highway). Go to the southwest side of the main parking lot and look for sign that says "Shuttle Only"
  • Genesee Medical Offices: Stops at 9333 Genesee Ave., La Jolla, near the northeast corner of Genesee and Executive Drive
  • UCSD Thornton Hospital: Stops at the main building entrance, north side, by valet parking attendant
  • Moores Cancer Center – La Jolla: Stops at the main building entrance, north side, by valet parking attendant
