The Community Advisory Council on Inclusion and Diversity (CACID)
The current community members of the advisory council are Ruben Barrales, Chief Executive Officer of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce; Norma Cazares, past President of the South Bay Forum; Delores Jacobs, Chief Executive Officer of the San Diego LGBT Community Center; Ray King, Chief Executive Officer of the Urban League of San Diego County; and Joni Low, past President and Chief Executive Officer of the Asian Business Committee.
Current Health System staff members are Patty Bojakowski, Nurse Manager at the Family Maternity Care Center; Aaron Byzak, Director of Government Affairs and Community Outreach; Paul Craig, Chief Human Resources Officer and Chief Risk Officer; Patricia Atanoa, Security Services and Chair of the Staff Diversity Association; and Tracey Sturgis, Cook.
The CACID focuses on fostering greater understanding among people of diverse backgrounds and culture, and makes recommendations on how the Health System can achieve the highest level of cultural competency in all interactions with staff, patients, families and the community.
In broad terms, the CACID seeks to open the lines of communication within the Health System, as well as outside to the communities surrounding the Health System.
CACID Vision: UC San Diego Heath System will strive to provide the highest level of cultural competency in all interactions with staff, patients and families, and the community.
CACID mission: UC San Diego Health System and its stakeholders will foster greater understanding among people of diverse backgrounds and cultures by promoting open communication, community interaction, and programmatic support.
The CACID’s objectives are to promote:
- Open communication – by providing a forum for community stakeholders to discuss issues of importance related to our Health System’s interactions with diverse audiences.
- Community interaction – by exploring opportunities for our Health System to expand its reach and relationships with the broader community to promote health education and awareness, and collaborative relationships.
- Programmatic support – by providing insight and perspective to our Health System’s staff related to the development of culturally competent programs and services.
The CACID meets quarterly. The community members report on feedback from their communities and the Health System staff provide information on what is currently being done to promote diversity and inclusion at the Health System, and areas that need more attention.
