Advanced Surgery at Jacobs Medical Center
The A. Vassiliadis Family Hospital for Advanced Surgery, located on the second and third floors of UC San Diego Jacobs Medical Center, will offer patients access to more than 200 surgeons who specialize in complex procedures for all medical conditions.
A few examples of these surgeries include: MRI-guided gene therapy for brain cancer; heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy for abdominal cancers; complex spine and joint reconstruction, and delicate microsurgery to restore voice and hearing.
Life-saving Diagnostics and Surgical Techniques
In collaboration with research and engineering colleagues, UC San Diego surgeons will continue to refine their pioneering innovations in robotic technology, miniaturized microsurgery, single-incision laparoscopy and “scarless” natural orifice transluminal endoscopy surgery, bringing new surgical options to patients sooner.
To enhance safety, and to achieve the best possible outcomes for patients, surgeons will have access to the region’s only intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines. From two operating suites, neurosurgeons will be able to image the brain in real-time to be certain that malignancies, such as glioblastoma, have been removed.
Intraoperative ultrasound and computed tomography (CT) will be used in two adjoining operating suites for a range of procedures, including lymph node mapping and other applications under development. There will also be an on-site pathology laboratory that will enable the evaluation of many kinds of surgical samples within as little as 20 minutes.
State-of-the-Art Hospital Design
The A. Vassiliadis Family Hospital for Advanced Surgery will have 14 new, 650-square-foot operating rooms (ORs), including two inter-operative MRI ORs and two CT ORs. These rooms are larger than a standard OR and were designed with input from the UC San Diego Center for the Future of Surgery, which tests and teaches strategies for minimizing discomfort and reducing recovery times – to return people to their lives and loved-ones sooner.
The integration of advanced diagnostic and imaging technologies into operating rooms – to better identify successful treatment strategies – is a main purpose for establishing the A. Vassiliadis Family Hospital for Advanced Surgery.
To facilitate this life-saving goal, Jacobs Medical Center will be equipped with the most advanced information technology, including a 10-gigabit Ethernet information superhighway that will allow surgeons to receive and view full panels of digital diagnostic imagery in near real-time.
Patients will recover in one of 36 private Intensive Care Unit or Intermediate Care Unit rooms. Each room has a private bathroom and fold-out bed for a family member.
