MICROBIOLOGY

Specimen requirements: Sterile Specimen Container
  or: Sterile Trap (Lukens-Trap)
  NOT ACCEPTABLE:  Sputum Swabs
Unit of measure: N/A
Ideal sample: 5 - 10 mL
Absolute minimum amount: 2 mL
Method of collection: Expectorated or induced sample (not saliva)
Transportation: Deliver to Laboratory within 1-2 hours. Delayed samples should be refrigerated.
Label instructions: All containers must be labeled with patient name and medical record number.
Request test on form: Multi Labs/Micro/Viro/Serology ( 151-905 )

Special Instructions: Deeply coughed specimen, transtracheal aspirate, or bronch brush preferred. Recommended screening procedure: 3 first morning specimens collected on 3 successive days.  However, 3 samples collected at 8 hour intervals will be accepted.  Have patient rinse mouth well with water to avoid contamination with food particles and mouth flora.
