Deliver to laboratory within one
hour, or refrigerate for no more than 24 hours. Recommended specimen collection
follows to avoid contamination with normal skin FLORA. Clean catch specimen:
male-cleanse end of penis using 2 betadine swabsticks, with chux under penis.
Push foreskin back and cleanse glans. Rinse with sterile 4x4 gauze. Have patient
void into sterile container until 1/3 full, change to second container. Instruct
patient to void middle portion of stream in second sterile container (about 30
cc). Complete voiding into first container or urinal. Send second container to
laboratory. Discard first container. Female-using 3 betadine swabsticks, cleanse
entire perineal area. Spread labia and cleanse urinary meatus and inner labia
with 2 swabsticks. Press 2 more swabsticks on meatus, making a small circle
outward toward the labia. Repeat with 1 more swabstick. Rinse with 20 cc sterile
water from a syringe. Allow patient to void into bedpan, catch 30 cc urine in
