Obtain
BBL Cultureswab Plus from the Microbiology
lab. Patient preparation: apply 10% povidine to site and allow to remain on skin
for 2-4 minutes. Remove iodine with alcohol swab. Collect fluid or pus with a
swab. If sufficient sample, collect pus in syringe rather than on swabs. Remove
needle and replace with a sterile luer-Loc syringe plug (storehouse stock
#175-612). Requisition must state specific site of specimen, current antibiotic
therapy, clinical diagnosis, and time of collection. Routine culture for abscess
will include a primary gram stain and culture for aerobes, and susceptibilities.
Anaerobe culture must be ordered. |
