Transportation: Transport to the Laboratory immediately.
Label instructions: Specimen must be labeled with patient name, Medical Record and Patient numbers.

Special Instructions: After specimen is obtained, leave specimen in syringe, remove needle and replace with sterile luer-loc syringe plug. Contamination with normal flora of skin or other body surfaces should be avoided. Routine culture includes culture for aerobes, a gram stain, and sensitivities.  Anaerobe culture must be ordered.
