Special Instructions: The INR can not be ordered separately. INR is a part of the Prothrombin time result

 INR is obtained by dividing the patient's protime result by the geometric mean of the normal range raised to the exponential value of the international sensitivity index (ISI). The ISI value is assigned by the manufacturer for the type of thromboplastin reagent and instrument that is used in the laboratory for the assay. INR values are essential for following the current recommended therapeutic ranges for patients who are on oral anti-coagulant therapy. INR = 2 to 3 for most patients and for patients with mechanical prosthetic heart valves: INR = 2.5 to 3.5.
