MICROBIOLOGY

Specimen requirements: Fresh very soft or liquid stool, with no preservatives.
Unit of measure: N/A
Ideal sample: N/A
Absolute minimum amount: 1 mL
Method of collection: Collect in sterile cup or clean cup.
Transportation: 2-25 degrees C. Can be stored at room temp. for 48 hrs. or refrigerated for 5 days.
Label instructions: All containers must be labeled with patient name and medical record number.
Request test on form: C. difficile Toxin PCR
Order/entry screen(s): Microbiology/Virology
Stat frequency: N/A
Stat turn around time: N/A
Routine frequency: Performed one time daily, Monday through Saturday
Must be in by: 6 AM
Routine turn around time: 48 hours

Method: Polymerase Chain Reaction
Special Instructions: Pass liquid or soft stool directly into a clean, dry container. Soft stool is defined as stool assuming the shape of the container. Swab specimens are not recommended for toxin testing. Formed stools are not acceptable.
