AMNIOTIC FLUID: Collect in sterile
tube or syringe. Transport immediately to laboratory. AUTOPSY TISSUE: Place in
sterile container containing viral transport media. BIOPSIES: Place in sterile
container and send IMMEDIATELY to laboratory or place in viral transport media
and transport to laboratory as soon as possible. BODY FLUIDS: Place in sterile
container and transport as soon as possible to laboratory. BRONCHIAL
WASHINGS/BRUSHINGS/LAVAGES: Transport collection container to laboratory as soon
as possible. BUFFY COATS: Collect 1-7 mL of blood in a heparinized (green top)
tube. Place on ice and transport to laboratory. CSF: Transport CSF tube to
laboratory as soon as possible. LESIONS/SKIN SCRAPINGS: HSV - Using a spatula,
BD blade, vigorously scrape the lesion until the base of vesicle is visible.
Scrape 2-3 more times and place the blade in the viral transport media. VZV -
Using a tuberculin syringe, aspirate the fluid without dislodging the vesicle.
Recap the needle using a one-handed scoop technique or passive recapping device.
The fluid is in the needle. Put syringe on ice and transport immediately to
laboratory. SPUTA: Obtain specimen in sterile container or collection cup.
Transport to laboratory as soon as possible. STOOL SPECIMENS: Collect a small
amount of fecal material in a stool container or sterile bottle. Transport to
laboratory as soon as possible.
SWABS-EYES/NP/THROAT/STOOL/CERVIX/VAGINA/URETHRAL: Using the swab that comes
with the viral transport media, swab the area vigorously. Place the swab into
the media and break off the tip to fit the container. Transport to the
laboratory as soon as possible. TRACHEAL ASPIRATES:
Transport collection container to laboratory as soon as possible. URINES:
Collect fresh urine in sterile container and transport to laboratory as soon as
possible. ***GENERAL VIRAL CULTURE DOES NOT INCLUDE CMV. ORDER SEPARATELY. REFER
