LESIONS/SKIN SCRAPINGS: "Preferred
Method" - Using a tuberculin syringe, aspirate the fluid without dislodging the
vesicle. Recap the needle using a one-handed scoop technique or a passive
recapping device. The fluid is in the tip of the needle. Put syringe on ice and
send immediately to lab. "Alternative Method" - Using a swab which comes with
the transport media, vigorously scrape the lesion until the base of the vesicle
is visible. Scrape 2-3 more times and place the swab into the media and break
off the tip to fit the container. Deliver to laboratory as soon as possible.
AMNIOTIC FLUID: Collect in sterile tube or syringe. Transport to laboratory as
soon as possible. BUFFY COATS: Collect 1-7 mL of blood in a heparinized (green
top) tube. Place on ice and transport to laboratory. CSF: Transport CSF tube to
laboratory as soon as possible. |
