| Special Instructions: |
Instruct patient to defecate into
clean, dry bedpan without mineral oil. Remove portion of specimen with tongue
blade and place in collection container. Submit two or three specimens on
separate days to increase the probability of isolating a pathogen. If
antibiotics are to be initiated, then it is acceptable to submit up to 2 samples
in a single day, as long as the samples are from separate bowel movements. The
best preservative for enteric pathogens is modified Carey-Blair transport
(inappropriate for C.Difficle, however). Rectal swab: pass swab beyond anal
sphincter, carefully rotate, and withdraw. Place in transport media. Please note
that the routine stool culture protocol always includes a screen for
Campylobacter. |
