UCSD's 119-bed John M. and Sally B. Thornton Hospital and Perlman Ambulatory Care Center opened in the summer of 1993.

Specialty outpatient services are based at the adjacent Perlman Ambulatory Care Center, along with pharmacy and radiology services.
Patients staying in the intermediate care wing at Thornton Hospital can order meals, snacks or desserts (including diabetic-friendly items) off a menu at any time of day.
