 UCSD's 119-bed John M. and Sally B. Thornton Hospital and Perlman Ambulatory Care Center opened in the summer of 1993.
Thornton Hospital is a general medical-surgical facility that offers a full range of services, including:
Specialty outpatient services are based at the adjacent Perlman Ambulatory Care Center, along with pharmacy and radiology services.

 Patients staying in the intermediate care wing at Thornton Hospital can now enjoy the hotel-like atmosphere of the facility's beautiful surroundings and services.
"People come to the hospital sick and we make sure their overall meal experience enhances their stay and to make sure they feel they are at home and that they can order something they are familiar with instead of standard hospital food," said Maria Rihana, with UCSD hospitality services.
At any time of the day, patients can order room service from a diabetic-friendly menu. Every patient in the hospital can order room service meals, snacks or desserts off a menu any time of day.
