Located on the second floor of Thornton, the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) in La Jolla, specializes in caring for Medical/Surgical Intensive Care patients. This unit's 12 beds specialize in Neurosurgery, Stroke Care, general surgery, and Oncology. In addition we care for a variety of patients that include BMT, cancer related surgeries and sepsis patients. The patient staff ratio on this unit is 1:1 or 1:2 and there is a mix of RN's, HUSC, Clinical Care Partners (CCP), Respiratory Therapists, Pharmacy and Physicians.
We require a CA RN license with CPR (BART) and ACLS (ART) certifications. Candidates with CCRN, CRRT, Chemo certified, experience with Bone Marrow Transplant patients and Oncology are preferred. Successful candidates will have acute care ICU experience, the personal commitment to provide exceptional care to high acuity patients and their families, and vision to support community wellness.
Hospital and Unit Shared Governance Committees on the Thornton ICU include Education, Competency, Preceptor, Magnet, Critical Care, and Code Blue.
We offer a new grad training program about 4 times a year which includes 3 months of training on the unit, enrollment in the AACN Critical Care internship program which includes 2 classroom days and 2 days on the floor. Employee will then spend 3 months of day shifts on the floor following orientation.
Thornton ICU offers patient and family education days and community health days. Volunteer activities: (runs, walks, etc.) many nurses participated in Heart Walk, Breast Cancer 3day, and several nurses served mission in Haiti. Angela Klinkhamer served medical mission in PERU in 2012, Mary Hellyar and Cassia Chevillon served medical mission in Oakland Ca. in 2012. One of our nurses will be serving on the Mercy Ship in January 2013.
We are passionate about Palliative care and have a class coming up soon. Two IRB approved research projects currently underway, as well as more evidence based practice research projects currently in the works. In Thornton ICU at least 6 people are currently working on their CNIII project.
