UCSD Medical Center Hosts 9th Annual "Day With A Doctor"

UCSD Medical Center Housestaff recently hosted a number of high school students interested in health care careers. A full day was dedicated to a one-on-one shadowing program to help students get a first-hand look at being a doctor.

“Today’s program helped me decide to be a pediatrician, and continue on with my education,” said Soakmaly Meach, Lincoln High School.

The Day with A Doctor program gives teenagers a look behind-the-scenes at what life is like as a physician. UCSD Medical Center hosted 10 high school students from Lincoln High School and Team UCSD Program.

The shadow/mentoring program, now in its ninth year, pairs high school students in grades 10 through 12 with a housestaff physician for a day. Gigi Neely, M.D., Housestaff President, coordinated the housestaff participants and Eileen Callahan, Health Sciences Communications, coordinated the high school students. The morning activities included a one-on-one physician/student and the second half of the day was dedicated to doctors explaining to the students their specialty and how they chose medicine as a career.

“Medical knowledge progresses very fast so you’re always reading and learning more things and new terms,” said Lisa Morris, Lincoln High School.

This program is just a part of the Medical Center's commitment to helping high school students discover medicine.
