Free Bone Density Scans Available for Bone Density/Breast Cancer Study
A free bone density scan is available for women age 65 and older who volunteer for a UCSD clinical trial investigating the risk factors associated with breast cancer and low bone density. Trial investigators are looking for women with normal mammograms as well as those with a diagnosis of Stage I breast cancer and surgery. Participants should not be using osteoporosis medications. The Effect of Romantic Relationships on Mental Health
The impact of romantic relationships on mental health is the topic of a UCSD clinical trial that invites the participation of couples. Investigators are looking for partners age 18 and older who live together, with at least one partner in treatment for depression, anxiety or other mental health issues. Sleep Apnea and Hypertension Investigated
Non-smoking men and women age 30 to 65 who suffer from sleep apnea are sought for a clinical trial of the relationship between this sleep disorder and hypertension, or high blood pressure. Sleep apnea occurs when the tissues at the back of the throat periodically close, causing the sleeper to gasp for air. Participants in the study will receive a thorough sleep study, a physical and laboratory tests, and up to $400 in compensation. The study requires three days of hospital inpatient testing and two weeks of real or placebo outpatient treatment with a real or placebo Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) device. The Effects of Hormone Replacement Therapy on the Heart and Kidneys
Postmenopausal women ages 40 to 65 are sought for a study of the effects of hormone replacement therapy on the cardiovascular system and kidney function. The women should be non-smokers with normal blood pressure who are not currently taking hormone replacement. Volunteers will spend one outpatient day at the UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest, take either real or placebo medication for three months, then return for another day of testing. Clinical Trial Looks at Zoloft and Wellbutrin for Depressed Patients
Depressed individuals between 18 and 70 years of age are sought by the UCSD Mental Health Clinical Research Center for a study of the medications Zoloft and Wellbutrin. Participants will receive a sleep evaluation at the VA Medical Center, free physical and lab work, and $20 compensation. Information is available at (858) 552-8585, ext. 2542.
