A survey published in the September 2002 issue of San Diego Magazine identified 247 San Diego physicians in 30 specialties who were rated best in the region by their peers. Seventy-eight of those selected are UCSD physicians. Selections were made from more than 4,000 regional practitioners by the winners of the 2001 physician survey. In producing the survey, San Diego Magazine collaborated with Best Doctors, Inc. of South Carolina, which conducts surveys all across the country, involving some 30,000 doctors in more than 40 specialties.

The key survey question was: "If you or a loved one needed a doctor in your specialty, and you could not treat them yourself, to whom would you refer them?"
