UCSD's Owen Clinic Celebrates
20 Years with Successful Gala/Fundraiser

$100,000 will support international fellowships

More than 250 guests helped the Owen Clinic of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) celebrate two decades of excellence in HIV/AIDS care, research and education at an elegant 20th anniversary gala on Saturday, November 16, at the El Cortez Don Room and Terrace. An estimated $100,000 was raised to support the Clinic's international fellowship programs.

"Torchbearers of Healthcare and Dignity Across the World" began with a reception at 6:00 p.m. and dinner at 7:00 p.m. Dr. Robert Ross, President and CEO of the California Endowment, was guest speaker for the evening. Ruth Lyn Riedel, Ph.D., President and CEO of the Alliance Healthcare Foundation, was Event Chair. Roche was the premier sponsor of the event, contributing $50,000. Platinum sponsor Abbott Laboratories contributed $25,000, and the California Endowment and the Waitt Family Foundation were Gold Sponsors at $10,000 each.

The Owen Clinic was founded by UCSD Medical Center in the early 1980s, just as the HIV virus was first beginning to baffle the medical community with its devastating symptoms. San Diego's first AIDS death was reported in 1982. Today, thanks to advances in treatment, an estimated 14,000 men, women and children are living with the virus, and more than 900,000 Americans live with all forms of HIV disease.

Directed by Dr. Christopher Mathews, for two decades the Owen Clinic has been the region's premier HIV/AIDS treatment facility and is in fact considered one of the leading programs in the nation. The Clinic fellowship programs provide training for physicians from around the world, who return to their communities better prepared to care for children and adults living with HIV/AIDS, and to combat the spread of the virus.
