February – The 2006 UCSD Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action and Diversity Awards recipients included these individuals and departments at UCSD Medical Center: Joseph Caperna, M.D., and the Owen Clinic; Patrick Weiss, (Chief Executive Officer, UCSD Medical Center Recipient); Department of Orthopaedic Surgery; Infant Special Care Center; and Senior Behavioral Health, 7 East…UCSD said farewell to David N. Bailey, M.D., Deputy Vice Chancellor, Health Sciences and Dean of Faculty and Student Matters, who accepted a position at UC Irvine as the first Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs…The joint doctoral program in Clinical Psychology offered by UCSD and San Diego State University was ranked the top program in the country among all clinical psychology Ph.D. degree programs.
March –Irving “Jake” Jacoby, M.D., Clinical Professor, Department of Medicine, Emergency Medical Services and Commander, Disaster Medical Assistance Team San Diego (DMAT San Diego CA-4) was awarded the 2007 Faculty Excellence Award for Community Service at the 32nd Annual UCSD Chancellor’s Associates Award Program…UCSD Medical Center Apheresis Program celebrated its 25th anniversary, having performed more than 12,500 treatments…Dennis Moran, FACHE, Associate Director, UCSD Medical Center, advanced to Fellow status in the American College of Healthcare Executives.
April – Judy L. Bradrick was appointed new Director of Volunteer Services for UCSD Medical Center…National Volunteer Week was celebrated at UCSD Medical Center…UCSD Community Pediatrics received the 12th Annual Multicultural Heritage Award for 2007, sponsored by the San Diego Business Journal and Stewart Title.
May –Ronnah Pascua, Oncology/BMT, was selected as the David and Alice Miller Nurse of the Year at the 26th Annual Nurse Recognition Awards ceremony at UCSD Medical Center, Hillcrest. Nursing Excellence Distinguished Awards went to Anna Parkman, Perinatal Nurse of the Year; Candy Mayer, Nephrology Nurse of the Year; Boris Stens, Ellen Brigadier Award for Excellence in Neonatal; Bobbie Brother, Sally Killeen Award; Mila Santos, Victor Schulman Award; and Lara Bentely, Norton Brown Award. June – A “Mad Hatter” Tea Party raised funds to benefit the cooking class program for patients at Moores UCSD Cancer Center…Clinical Engineering Week gave staff an opportunity to learn more about clinical engineering services…The UCSD Clean Team sponsored “Dump the Junk” Day to help clean hospitals, clinics and offices of clutter, excess equipment, furniture and more.
July – UCSD and Rady Children’s Hospital formed an alliance with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to expand critical research in childhood cancers and other pediatric diseases and to provide access in San Diego to clinical trials sponsored by Memphis-based St. Jude… UCSD Medical Center was the only San Diego hospital to rank among the best in the nation in six specialty areas in the 2007 U.S. News and World Report annual “Best Hospitals” issue…Candy Mayer, R.N., lead nurse in the home dialysis area of the department, was named the first Nephrology Nurse of the Year.

September –The Sulpizio Family Cardiovascular Center broke ground for their new home, a 128,000 square foot expansion to Thornton Hospital… Plastic surgeon Amanda Gosman, M.D., and Edward Mariano, M.D., Director of Regional Anesthesia at UCSD, were recognized by San Diego Metropolitan Magazine in their 40 Under Forty selection of exceptional young business and civic leaders…The new UCSD Medical Center Diversity Association received official recognition from the University and held its first meeting…UCSD Community Pediatrics was recognized for nutrition education by the San Diego County Childhood Obesity Initiative…UCSD Medical Center’s first Patient Safety Conference was held at the Bahia Resort Hotel to discuss state-of-the-art ideas on patient safety risks and translate the ideas into actions providers can use to make patients safer…UCSD Medical Center held its 22nd Annual All Staff Dinner Dance with the theme “UCSD – Best in the West”
October – Nearly 70 UCSD physicians from 28 departments earned a place in San Diego Magazine’s 2007 “Physicians of Exceptional Excellence.” In addition, a feature story highlighted Denise Barnard, M.D., Director of the Women’s Cardiovascular Program at UCSD Medical Center; Thomas Moore, M.D., Chair of the Department of Reproductive Medicine; and Lori Marquez, Physician Referral Supervisor at UCSD Medical Center…Rich Liekweg, Chief Executive Officer, UCSD Medical Center, was appointed to the Federal Communications Commission Joint Advisory Committee on Communications Capabilities of Emergency Medical and Public Health Care Facilities…The American Heart Association recognized UCSD Medical Center as a Fit-Friendly Workplace with a Gold Medal award…UCSD Medical Center received a Medal of Honor award from the Department of Health and Human Services for rating consistently above 75 percent in organ donation and a special crystal award for having achieved this three years in a row…UCSD Medical Center rose to meet the extreme challenges of the San Diego County wildfires, with the UCSD Regional Burn Center treating approximately 50 patients, including firefighters. Kane, M.D., F.A.C.S., a nationally recognized researcher and specialist in the diagnosis and treatment of prostate and kidney cancer was named Chief of Urology at UCSD Medical Center and Moores UCSD Cancer Center…Lisa Stocks, Executive Director for Lifesharing was one of 25 honorees at the 14th Annual Women Who Mean Business Awards and Therese Rymer, Director of Emergency Preparedness Response and Deputy Commander for DMAT was a nominee…UCSD Medical Center was the medical provider/sponsor for the Breast Cancer 3-Day benefiting Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
December – Faye Dunable, R.N., was the first Employee of the Quarter recognized by the Power of Excellence Standards of Performance Committee…Staff and volunteers were treated to the Annual All Staff Holiday Meals with a choice of a pancake breakfast or a spaghetti dinner. Each also received a special gift – a UCSD Medical Center blanket.
