The UCSD Cardiovascular Center Associates http://www.heartcenter.ucsd.edu/ are sponsoring a public lecture featuring Anthony DeMaria, M.D., UCSD Cardiovascular Center Director and the Jack and Judy White Chair in Cardiology, UCSD School of Medicine. Dr. DeMaria's talk on the benefits of intense cholesterol lowering will begin at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 17, at the Center for Molecular Genetics auditorium, on the UCSD main campus. Light refreshments precede the lecture at 6:30 p.m.

The UCSD Cardiovascular Center's Faculty Ambassador Events present faculty members' latest work on heart disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. The lectures are sponsored by the UCSD Cardiovascular Center Associates, who help support the Center's programs and research via an annual gift.

The UCSD Cardiovascular Center will provide patients with a full range of diagnostic and treatment options, including access to clinical trials, in one state-of-the-art facility that will be located adjacent to Thornton Hospital in La Jolla. The Center will centralize clinical and research activities in heart and vascular disease and stroke management. As part of the University, the Center will train cardiologists in applying new techniques and technologies. Currently a "center without walls,", the UCSD Cardiovascular Center's programs and faculty are located at UCSD Medical Centers in Hillcrest and La Jolla, and on campus at the UCSD School of Medicine.

UCSD AIDS Research Institute to Benefit From Macy’s October 2 Fundraiser

UCSD’s AIDS Research Institute has been selected as a recipient of a Macy’s Fashion Valley and Mission Valley Home Store’s Passport In-Store fundraiser scheduled for Saturday, October 2. Passport In-Store is a shopping event benefiting more than eight HIV/AIDS community organizations in the San Diego area, including the AIDS Research Institute. The activity-filled day of fashion events, special discounts, cooking demonstrations, makeovers, and the chance to win a $1,000 Macy’s shopping spree, is sponsored by Cargo, Star 100.7, and Luna Bar.

In past events, Macy’s has raised more than $18 million in HIV/AIDS research, prevention, treatment and care to meet emerging needs. For this year’s fundraiser, the AIDS Research Institute will sell $10 tickets, and retain 100 percent of that money to support its diverse HIV/AIDS research and clinical activities at UCSD. In addition, Macy’s employees will sell tickets to their customers three weeks prior to Passport In-Store, and Macy’s will split these funds among participating charities. Macy’s also will contribute an additional $3 to the AIDS Research Institute for every pre-sold ticket redeemed during Passport In-Store.

August 21st Event Aboard Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum to Feature The Mar Dels and Fireworks

The UCSD Cardiovascular Center is calling “All Hearts on Deck!” to celebrate its successful campaign to bring the best in cardiovascular care to the San Diego community.

This spectacular fundraising and “friendraising” event will be held on Saturday, August 21, 2004, aboard our city’s newest venue, the Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum, from 6:30 to 10 p.m.

Come aboard for the best views in town from the flight deck of this historic aircraft carrier. Enjoy dancing to The Mar Dels, a fireworks show, tours of the Midway, and more!

UCSD Obstetrics Program to Star on Popular Cable Television Show - April 4, 2004

UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest will be showcased in an upcoming episode of Special Delivery, the Discovery Health Channel's very popular show about high-risk pregnancy and delivery. The episode, Unexpected Joy, will air April 4, 2004 at 9PM. It will repeat at 12 midnight and airs again on April 10 at 6PM.

UCSD was chosen for the episode because of its nationally recognized obstetrical program for women with problem pregnancies. The episode follows the dramatic stories of several women from the beginning of their difficult hospitalizations in the labor and delivery unit, through their emotional deliveries, to their babies arrival in the Infant Special Care Center. This is the second Special Delivery episode to be filmed at UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest. The first episode highlighting UCSD’s well-respected obstetrics program aired in October and November of 2003.

“State-of-the-heart” Imaging is Topic of UCSD Cardiovascular Center Faculty Ambassador Lecture

The UCSD Cardiovascular Center is sponsoring a free public lecture featuring Maleah Grover-McKay, M.D., who is Co-Director of Advanced Cardiovascular Imaging within the Division of Cardiology and Department of Radiology at the UCSD School of Medicine.

The talk – “State-of-the-heart Imaging with Magnetic Resonance and Computed Tomography” – is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 25, at the Center for Molecular Genetics auditorium, at the UCSD main campus. Light refreshments precede the lecture, at 6:15 p.m.

Grover-McKay has expertise in cardiac nuclear medicine, positron emission tomography, electron beam and multi-slice computed tomography, and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, in addition to clinical experience.

She received her B.A. and M.D. from Stanford University followed by a residency in Internal Medicine at UCLA, a year as a NIH Research fellow at the Cardiovascular Research Institute, UCSF, two years of Cardiology fellowship at UCSD, and two years of nuclear medicine residency at UCLA. She has Board Certification in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases, and Nuclear Medicine.

Grover-McKay has published 40 articles and 12 book chapters. She received a Gold Medal for Scientific Exhibit from the Society of Nuclear Medicine Meeting, the Tetalman Memorial Award for Outstanding Young Investigator in Nuclear Medicine and the James T. Case Certificate of Merit Award for Outstanding Research in Radiological Sciences.

Prostate Cancer Lecture  -- March 9, 2004 - The Rebecca and John Moores UCSD Cancer Center is sponsoring a free public lecture on food, fitness and prostate cancer. The talk will be presented by Dr. Alan R. Kristal, an expert in cancer prevention from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle. It is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 9, at the Hilton San Diego Resort on Mission Bay, 1775 East Mission Bay Dr. A reception will precede the lecture, at 5:30 p.m. Free parking is available. Kristal will discuss aspects of prostate cancer, its prevalence – even among men with low PSA – and the role of dietary factors that may both prevent prostate cancer and reduce the risk of developing aggressive disease after a prostate cancer diagnosis. Participants Sought for “Men in Motion” Study - February 26, 2004

Men between the ages of 25 and 55 are sought by the UCSD School of Medicine to participate in a two-year study designed to help men lose weight, become more physically active, and improve their dietary habits. Sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, the study is called “PACE: Men in Motion.”

The program is Internet-based and allows participants to access a website available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. “PACE: Men in Motion” consists of two different groups: Program A will focus on physical activity and nutrition, while Program B includes comprehensive education on various men’s health issues, plus activity and diet. Volunteers will be randomly assigned to either Program A or B and will receive financial compensation for their participation.
