Theodore Friedmann, M.D., Pediatrics and Biomedical Ethics, and director of the Program in Human Gene Therapy, was quoted in an Associated Press wire story about inheritable gene modification (IGM), which is the alteration of genes that affect future generations. Dr. Friedmann was a co-chair of an AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science) committee that for two years investigated the safety, ethics and religious concerns of IGM. The committee's report was presented in a news conference in Washington D.C., where Dr. Friedmann said that IGM technology is not safe for humans and "experiments have produced animals born with major birth defects, gross distortions and fatal abnormalities." The committee recommended that a public committee be created to monitor and oversee gene modification research.

These findings, reported in the March 2 New England Journal of Medicine, suggest a defensive molecular mechanism launched by the body to protect against the damaging effects of oxygen deprivation on the heart.
