May, 2008 UCSD’s Shiley Eye Center is receiving national accolades for its visionary approach to studying and treating age-related eye diseases such as macular degeneration. Shiley’s Division of Community Ophthalmology was the only clinical site, out of 82 nationwide, to receive an award for Exemplary Overall Performance Efforts at the recent AREDS2 (Age Related Eye Disease Study 2) annual conference. City of Hope Gives Charles von Gunten Humanitarian AwardJanuary, 2008 Charles von Gunten, M.D., Ph.D., Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at UCSD, is the 2007 recipient of the Sarnat Distinguished Humanitarian Award, given by the City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center in recognition of outstanding scientific and humanitarian achievement in hospice and palliative care.

UCSD Assistant Professor of Pathology named V Foundation Scholar
October, 2007 Jack Bui, M.D., Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Pathology, has been selected as a 2008 V Foundation Scholar for his proposal entitled, “Enhancing Tumor Recognition by Inducing NKG2D Ligands.” Bui will receive $100,000 over two years to support this protein research. Bui, who joined the UCSD Faculty and the Cancer Center in 2006, is the seventh V Scholar the Center has successfully sponsored since 1995, joining recent Scholars Seth Field, M.D., Ph.D. (2007), Ananda Goldrath, Ph.D. (2005), and Amy Pasquinelli, Ph.D. (2004). Earlier this year, the Cancer Center competitively awarded Bui an ACS-IRG grant of $30,000 to support a project focusing on innate immune cell and tumor cell interactions.

The award recognizes birth facilities that actively encourage breastfeeding as the primary source of newborn nutrition.
