UCSD Assistant Professor of Pathology named V Foundation Scholar
October, 2007 Jack Bui, M.D., Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Pathology, has been selected as a 2008 V Foundation Scholar for his proposal entitled, “Enhancing Tumor Recognition by Inducing NKG2D Ligands.” Bui will receive $100,000 over two years to support this protein research. Bui, who joined the UCSD Faculty and the Cancer Center in 2006, is the seventh V Scholar the Center has successfully sponsored since 1995, joining recent Scholars Seth Field, M.D., Ph.D. (2007), Ananda Goldrath, Ph.D. (2005), and Amy Pasquinelli, Ph.D. (2004). Earlier this year, the Cancer Center competitively awarded Bui an ACS-IRG grant of $30,000 to support a project focusing on innate immune cell and tumor cell interactions.

The University of California, San Diego (UCSD) Medical Center received prestigious international recognition as a Baby-Friendly birth facility. The award recognizes birth facilities that actively encourage breastfeeding as the primary source of newborn nutrition. UCSD joins 52 U.S. hospitals and birth centers who have achieved the notable status. UCSD is only the second San Diego County hospital to receive the designation, following Scripps Encinitas. In the second year of collaboration with the San Diego County Medical Society (SDCMS), San Diego Magazine published its list of “Top Doctors”—physicians of exceptional excellence. In electronic balloting, more than 2,500 SDCMS member physicians were asked to “click on the names of . . . physicians to whom you would take a close family member if they needed a physician in your specialty.” Additionally, voters were given the option of writing in two physicians from outside their specialties. Two members of the UCSD School of Medicine faculty elected to the Institute of Medicine, the arm of the National Academy of Sciences that is both an honorific society and an advisory body on health and health policy matters. Kenneth Kaushansky, M.D., Chair of the Department of Medicine, and John West, M.D., Ph.D., Professor of Medicine, were among the 65 new active members announced by the IOM on Monday, October 18. This brings the total number of UCSD members to 25.
