UCSD School of Medicine establishes a major new center for research in AIDS with two of the world’s leading AIDS researchers at its helm: Flossie Wong-Staal, Ph.D., professor of Medicine, and Douglas Richman, M.D., professor of Pathology.
UCSD Healthcare develops the Senior Behavioral Health Program at Thornton Hospital, La Jolla. The program is a multidisciplinary psychiatric service providing inpatient diagnosis and treatment for seniors.

UCSD School of Medicine receives $2.6 million grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Funds are used to recruit faculty, particularly in immunology and human genetics, and to provide equipment for research activities.
Twin boys who were born attached at the chest and abdomen, were discharged from UCSD Medical Center nine days after they were surgically separated.
The HIV Neurobehavioral Research Center (HNRC) at UCSD Medical Center receives funding from the National Institutes of Health through the year 2001. The HNRC studies the effects of HIV/AIDS on the brain.
San Diego’s first minimally invasive coronary artery bypass surgery was successfully completed by Riyad Y. Tarazi, Associate Professor of Surgery at the San Diego Veteran’s Administration Medical Center. The innovative surgery is performed through a small incision in the chest wall and dramatically reduces hospitalization time.
UCSD Pediatrics relocates to the Perlman Ambulatory Care Center, adjacent to UCSD Thornton Hospital, La Jolla.
The National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) awards a $6.5 million grant to UCSD School of Medicine to improve immunization levels for young children in underserved areas.

The Abraham Ratner Children's Eye Center opens as an extension of UCSD's Shiley Eye Center, providing specialized care for children.
UCSD Medical Center is among the first in the nation to be certified as a Medicare lung transplant facility by the Health Care Financing Administration.
Construction of the Cellular and Molecular Medicine East (CMM East) building is completed, which houses research laboratories for the UCSD Gene Therapy Program, Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research- San Diego, Center for Human Reproduction and UCSD Cancer Center.
The UCSD Center for Women’s Health opens La Jolla office. The Center for Women’s Health serves the medical needs of women from teenage through senior years, specializing in preventive medicine and treating acute and chronic illness.

The Regents authorize the Organ and Tissue Acquisition Center (OTAC), based at UCSD Medical Center, to pursue discussions with representatives from Mexico regarding development of a binational organ donation program in Tijuana.
The Bannister Family House opens, providing affordable lodging for families of patients from outside the area.
UCSD Cancer Center starts the Thrivers' Network, a community resource for cancer patients, their families and friends to meet, share information, and hookup by videophone with a national network of survivors.
The UCSD Heart/Lung Transplant Team performs the first infant heart transplant in San Diego history, transplanting a healthy heart into a critically ill 16-moth-old boy.
1993
UCSD is named one of 16 Vanguard Centers for the Women's Health Initiative of the National Institutes of Health. The $12.2 million grant award will fund a 12-year study of postmenopausal women, with an emphasis on Latina women.
Transplant surgeons perform UCSD's 1,000th kidney transplant surgery and celebrate the Kidney Transplant Center's 25th anniversary.
UCSD Medical Center is selected by UNICEF to participate in the global Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative, a program to establish a standard of excellence for teaching and encouraging new mothers to breastfeed.
The John M. and Sally B. Thornton Hospital and Perlman Ambulatory Care Center opens. The first surgery is a delicate brain operation performed by School of Medicine Dean John Alksne, a neurosurgeon.
Surgeons with the UCSD Heart and Lung Transplant Program perform San Diego's first living related donor lung transplant, replacing the lungs of a 16-year-old cystic fibrosis patient with sections of each of his parents' lungs.
UCSD Medical Center opens the Center for Women's Health, consolidating primary care and specialty services for women, provided by female physicians.

UCSD is one of 14 medical centers nationwide established as a Multipurpose Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases Center by the National Institute of Arthritis and
Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases.
The first pancreas-kidney transplant in the region is performed on a diabetic man with kidney failure at UCSD Medical Center.
UCSD's Ortho-Med Center for Sports and Work-Related Injuries opens in La Jolla, featuring prototype equipment for evaluation and rehabilitation of muscle injury.
UCSD Medical Center researchers develop a new compound that dissolves gallstones. This shows great promise for patients who cannot undergo gallbladder surgery
because of other health problems.
The first laser surgery to treat benign prostate tumors is performed at UCSD Medical Center.
The National Institute of Mental Health establishes the nation's first Research Center for Late Life Psychosis at UCSD.
Several thousand staff members, physicians and community members attend opening ceremonies for the new UCSD Medical Center addition and tower
completion. The addition adds 89,000 square feet of patient care and support space.

Dr. Stuart Jamieson performs the region's first double-lung transplant.

The Alzheimer's Disease Research Center receives an $18.5 million grant from the National Institute on Aging. UCSD neurologist Leonard Thal will coordinate a
