Overview:  Vicky Newman, a member of the Cancer Center’s Prevention and Control Program, hosts these free events.  “Fighting Cancer with Your Fork” provides a practical overview of nourishing foods essential for health and healing with tips on how to incorporate these easily into your life. “Nutrition Solution for Common Challenges During Treatment”  focuses on managing treatment-related challenges that can occur, such as appetite loss, nausea, constipation, taste changes, and weight loss.  Link to additional details and schedule on nutrition lectures.

 Breast Cancer Survivorship Clinic
Location:
Moores UCSD Cancer Center
Overview: This new clinic will assist more than 400 new breast cancer patients each year. Patients will be scheduled for a combined post-care/wellness visit four to six weeks after completion of treatment.  You will be given an exam and an educational packet outlining a cancer survivorship plan.  Each packet contains information about lymphedema (swelling) and how to prevent complications associated with it, and an NCI booklet and companion DVD entitled "Facing Forward." The survivorship plan also includes literature that is tailored to the wellness experience of each individual, and deals with topics like fatigue, insomnia or menopausal symptoms.   The clinic, established by Barbara Parker, M.D., Medical Director of Oncology Services, will be directed by Nurse Practitioner Patricia Kormanik.  Lap-Band® Surgery Informational Seminar

Overview: If you or someone you know is struggling with severe obesity, the UCSD Medical Center’s LAP-BAND® Program for Obesity can help. The program offers patients an outpatient surgical solution for long-term weight loss.

With a highly trained team of surgeons, nurses, nutritionists, exercise therapists and psychologists, UCSD’s LAP-BAND® Program is able to provide patients with the safest, least invasive and only reversible weight loss procedure now available in the United States. Our comprehensive program will help guide you to a happier, healthier life. Attend an informational seminar and learn more about gastric banding as well as gastric sleeve and other surgical options.  Stein Insitute for Research on Aging - Lecture Series

 Nutrition Counseling Program

Overview: This program is designed to help you adopt a diet that will promote health and fight disease. Based on research conducted at UCSD, a nutritious diet can help you look and feel better, as well as help control weight. Program includes: 8 one-on-one counseling phone calls; computerized dietary analysis; education materials, self-monitoring tools; and recipes.

 Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia Support Group

Overview: A monthly educational seminar and support group for patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia.   Young Breast Cancer Patient Education and Psychotherapy Group

Overview: For breast cancer patients between the age 18-45. Participate in a research intervention study for young breast cancer patients. If you consent to participate, you will receive a pre-treatment assessment and goal of care plan; an 8-week educational and psychotherapeutic group; a post-treatment assessment and review of care plan; and treatment follow-up. Please contact a study coordinator if you are interested in participating.

 Melanoma Support Group

 Support Group for Women with Heart Disease

 Healing Foods Kitchen Cooking Class

Overview: The UCSD Health Behavior Studies Counseling Team will teach you how to prepare easy and healthy recipes using foods that promote health and help fight disease. Classes will include demonstration, discussion about ingredients, recipes, tasting, and educational handouts. Introductory classes are FREE OF CHARGE thanks to the generous support of Charmaine & Maurice Kaplan.

 Breastfeeding Support Group

Overview: A support group for breastfeeding moms and babies. This group is facilitated by a qualified lactation educator, and babies are welcome. Come and get your questions answered and meet other breastfeeding moms. Scale available for weighing babies.

 Grupo Esperanza - Spanish Speaking Patient Support Group

Overview: "Hope Group" - "Grupo Esperanza" is a monthly support group for Spanish-speaking cancer patients. Following the discussion, participants will be led through a guided imagery relaxation exercise.

 Lung Cancer Support Group

Overview: The GI Support Group provides education and support to patients diagnosed with gastrointestinal cancers including pancreas, liver, cholangiocarcinoma, gastric, esophageal, colon, rectal or anal cancer. Each month we provide an educational presentation and then the group has an opportunity to discuss issues related to the topic presented or other issues.


 Lap-Band Support Group

Overview:  This support group,  only for patients who have had Lap-Band surgery, focuses on the issues and changes associated with diet, nutrition, and lifestyle that accompanies the procedure. This support group provides a safe environment in which everyone is able to participate, share, ask questions, exchange advice and find support. Periodically, speakers will be brought in to discuss relevant topics and provide further education.

Groups meet on an ongoing monthly basis. They are drop-in groups; advance registration is not required.
