Emergency Department Care and Costs

The Emergency Department’s policy is that all patients receive a physical examination by a doctor prior to any contact with the patient's insurer or primary care physician. This ensures you will receive the most appropriate care regardless of your ability to pay or the decision of you health plan concerning payment.

Why You May Receive More Than One Bill

If you receive multiple bills, they will be for different parts of your emergency room visit. You will receive a bill for services provided by the Emergency Department doctor. You may also receive a bill from the UC San Diego Health System for hospital services, such as nursing, lab tests and radiology.

There may be additional bills for services provided by other specialty physicians involved in your care.
