Safe Sun Tips

  • Stay out of direct sunlight between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Use sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher; apply it liberally and often. Use sunscreens with wide spectrum UV blocking activity (look for the following ingredients when you buy a sunscreen: zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, and/or Parsol 1789).
  • Wear protective clothing
    • wear a hat that shades your face, ears and the back of your neck
    • wear long-sleeved shirts
    • pick bright colors like blue, orange, or yellow
    • choose more tightly woven clothes
    • if you want extra protection, you can purchase UV-protective clothing
  • Wear sunglasses with UVA and UVB protection.
  • Avoid tanning beds. If you want a tan, use a self-tanner (and don't forget to apply sunscreen on top of the fake tan).
